What is a Sure Start Maternity Grant?
The £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-time grant intended to assist with the expenses associated with having a newborn or adoptive child. Who is Eligible for the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant?

- The child you are looking after is not your partner’s, but rather someone else’s, and the youngster was older than 12 months when the arrangement began.
- You may be in the UK under humanitarian protection, refugee status, or you may have arrived from Afghanistan or the Ukraine.
- For a family member who is under 16 or between 16 and 19 who is enrolled in specific programs or courses, you are filing a claim.
If any of the following applies to you or your spouse and a newborn has entered your care within the last six months, you may also be eligible for the grant:
- Although you are not the baby’s mother, you are now in charge of them.
- The infant is up for adoption with you.
- It is authorized for you to adopt a child from abroad.
- You are subject to a residency order or adoption.
- For a surrogate delivery, you have a parental order in place.
- A baby has been given you as its caretaker.
DWP One-Off Grants 2024 Amount
There is no repayment required for a £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant. If, on the other hand, you are expecting twins or triplets, you are eligible for this payment.
- If you have twins or triplets, you can receive £500, and if you have more than one (and none are from multiple births), you can receive £1,000.
- You can receive £500 if you have triplets after having twins before.
Steps to Claim this Grant
Eleven weeks before to the week your baby is due, you are eligible to file a claim. Six months after your baby’s birth is the latest you may make a claim. You have six months to file a claim if you are taking on parental responsibilities. When adopting a child, you have to file your claim within 6 months of the child being put in your care.
